Metal Restoration, Façade Cleaning and Roof Replacement

The restoration project included removing all of the paint form the cast iron, zinc and cooper surfaces of the dome. The work required the erection of a temporary scaffold system up to the level of the weather vane (approximately 150 ft. above ground level). The exposed, non-structural cast iron was repaired by welding broken components together using nickel. Deteriorated sheet cooper in the cupola was replaced.

The extremely complex, stamped finial (near the top) was in extremely poor condition. The sheet zinc surface reacted very poorly to atmospheric pollution. The entire surface was covered with a fine polymer mesh embedded in an acrylic coating. The highly detailed characteristics of the finial were preserved.
